Module II: Sessions

:: Introduction to Module II: Group Care
The Philosophical Foundations of Caring for Infants and Toddlers in Groups is an introduction to the special issues of caring for infants in groups. This type of care is different from the care of one infant, e.g., in a typical family or nanny situation, and from the group care of older children. Infants in professional care thrive when they have assigned to them one or a very few consistent, caring adults providing security, individualized attention, responsiveness, familiarity, and protection in the context of a peaceful environment. more >>

:: More Than Just Routine
This highly interactive session covers the basics of caregiving routines and their importance as opportunities for learning and relationship building. It highlights feeding, diapering, and napping through the use of the video It's Not Just Routine (2nd Edition), as well as challenging participants to actively experience some of the complex cultural issues related to routine caregiving. more >>

:: Exploring Primary Caregiving and Continuity of Care
This session follows up on the screening of the video Together in Care with a deeper exploration of two of the three recommended policies - primary care and continuity. Activities encourage participants to explore their own experiences of connection and disconnection. more >>

:: Environments for Group Care
This is a two-part session focusing on (1) innovative uses of space and equipment to create small groups and support optimal development in infant care programs and (2) the video Space to Grow: Creating a Child Care Environment for Infants and Toddlers, which focuses on eight important concepts that quality infant care environments should have: Health, Safety, Comfort, Convenience, Choice, Flexibility, Movement, and Child Size. more >>

:: Making It Happen: Individualized Care and Small Groups
The focus of this workshop is two of PITC's four recommended policies for infant/toddler programs, small groups and individualized care. Presenters model the use of engaging activities to help participants reflect on the effect of having their own individual needs respected or not, experience the chaos of large groups of infants and toddlers through role play, and create floor plans of their own environments. more >>

:: Respectful Care

It features the video Respectfully Yours: Magda Gerber's Approach to Professional Infant/Toddler Care, is shown, an interview of Ms. Gerber by J. Ronald Lally, Ed.D., illustrated with footage from typical infant/toddler child care programs. more >>

:: Developing Your Plan for Training
In addition to the major content sessions, each module training institute concludes with a session focusing on issues of adult learning. During this session, participants are encouraged to raise issues that they anticipate facing as they take the information and materials out into the field to train. Time is allotted for participants to work in small groups to begin creating lesson plans for their certification papers and for their use in training caregivers. more >>

:: PITC Certification Paper Guidelines, Academic Units & CDA Information
