Exploring Primary Caregiving and Continuity of Care
A PITC Training Session
Format: 3 hour session, 30-40 participants, reflection, small group problem solving, mini-lecture, large group discussion, video
This session follows up on the screening of the video Together in Care with a deeper exploration of two of the three recommended policies - primary care and continuity. Activities encourage participants to explore their own experiences of connection and disconnection. The case for continuity of care is made through a discussion of attachment research that examines the relationship of attachment to caregiver behavior, infant temperament, cultural issues, etc. Finally, participants form small groups to develop ways to address social, economic, and psychological barriers to implementing the policies of primary care and continuity. Key topics include:

· Definitions of terms
· Secure vs. insecure relationships at home and in child care
· Attachment research related to child care and culture
· Implementation of primary care and continuity of care: Issues and barriers.
