This session focuses on the approach to infant/toddler care of internationally known expert Magda Gerber. It features the video Respectfully Yours: Magda Gerber's Approach to Professional Infant/Toddler Care, is shown, an interview of Ms. Gerber by J. Ronald Lally, Ed.D., illustrated with footage from typical infant/toddler child care programs. Participants view and discuss sometimes controversial issues such as guidance and discipline, toys and equipment, infant stimulation, and culture and family, as well as other important elements of group care. The main points of discussion in this session are:
· Definition of respectful care
· Magda Gerber's definition of autonomy;
· Going slowly and doing less
· An attenuated environment for infants
· Importance of an absolutely safe place for infants
· Composition of infant groups (Primary Care);
· Same-age versus mixed-age grouping;
