Introduction to Module I: Social-Emotional Growth & Socialization
Module I begins with a motivational introduction to the basic concepts of early social-emotional growth and socialization in the context of group care, with an emphasis on the development of a nurturing relationship between the infant and caregiver. The importance of responsive caregiving, individualizing care through an understanding of infant temperament, support for the critical role of family and culture, and stages of emotional development are discussed.

Understanding Children's Behavior
This session focuses on recognizing and understanding individual and developmental issues underlying the messages and behavior of infants and toddlers in group care. Concepts and training strategies for helping caregivers analyze and respond appropriately to infants and toddlers are introduced. Materials are distributed that support caregivers in recognizing the source of different infant/toddler behaviors and identifying appropriate strategies for working with them.

Temperament: A Practical Approach to Meeting Individual Needs
This is an interactive presentation introducing the nine temperament traits and three temperament types of infants and toddlers, based on the video Flexible, Fearful or Feisty: The Different Temperaments of Infants and Toddlers. It encourages participants to expand their understanding of temperament by creating a profile of their own temperament and that of a person close to them, in order to discover the influence of temperament on their relationship.

Guidance & Discipline with Infants and Toddlers in Group Care
This session includes an exploration of the roots of socialization and Margaret Mahler's theory of separation and individuation, as well as specific guidance techniques appropriate for children as they grow from birth to three years old. Video and print materials are used, as well as group problem solving activities.

Social-Emotional Milestones, Responsive Caregiving and Identity
This presentation provides an overview of emotional issues of each of the three stages of infancy-security, exploration, and identity, and relates them to the developmental milestones identified by Stanley Greenspan. Large and small group discussions explore the importance of responsiveness and how it affects self esteem and identity formation.

Developing Your Plan for Training
In addition to the major content sessions, each module training institute concludes with a session focusing on issues of adult learning. During this session, participants are encouraged to raise issues that they anticipate facing as they take the information and materials out into the field to train. Time is allotted for participants to work in small groups to begin creating lesson plans for their certification papers and for their use in training caregivers.

PITC Certification Paper Guidelines, Academic Units & CDA Information
This optional session is offered once for each dual-module training. The format is an informal group discussion with the faculty members about a range of topics related to certification papers and college credit.
