Guidance & Discipline with Infants and Toddlers in Group Care
A PITC Training Session
Format: 2½ hour session, 30-40 participants,
mini-lecture with overheads, questions and answers,
small group work on training projects.
This session includes an exploration of the roots of socialization and Margaret Mahler's theory of separation and individuation, as well as specific guidance techniques appropriate for children as they grow from birth to three years old. Video and print materials are used, as well as group problem solving activities. The main principles discussed are:

· Understand children's needs and abilities.
· Create an environment that is a "do", not a "don't" space.
· Be pro-active, not reactive, with children.
· Think about the underlying cause of a child's behavior.
· Create consistency for the child through open communication with parents and staff.
