Mary Jane Maguire-Fong is an author, speaker, and consultant in child development and early childhood education. She serves as faculty for WestEd’s Program for Infant/Toddler Care and as consultant for WestEd. She is professor emerita of early childhood education at American River College in Sacramento, California. She has been a preschool teacher, an infant center director, and an administrator for early childhood programs serving families in the migrant farm worker community.

Maguire-Fong is the author of the Teachers College Press book Teaching and Learning with Infants and Toddlers: Where Meaning Making Begins, co-author of Infant Development from Conception to Age 3: What Babies Ask of Us, and co-author of the California Department of Education 2016 publication The Integrated Nature of Learning. She was a contributing writer for the California Department of Education Infant/Toddler and Preschool Curriculum Frameworks and for the WestEd book Concepts for Care: 20 Essays on Infant/Toddler Development and Learning. Her work is inspired by the philosophy of teaching used in the birth to 5 programs in the city of Reggio Emilia, Italy.

Maguire-Fong received a BA in psychology and an MS in child development from the University of California, Davis. She also holds an Infant-Parent Mental Health Certificate from the University of Massachusetts.
